Christmas Party Makeup

Christmas party makeup looks to get you in the festive spirit

473 359 Vanity Van

Need some Christmas party makeup inspiration? ‘Tis the season to turn up the glamour a notch and to try out some dazzling new looks. Christmas is an exciting time for make up enthusiasts, so we have handpicked a selection of simple tips and tricks for putting a festive spin on your everyday makeup looks. So, ladies, dig out your best party wear that has been gathering dust at the back of your wardrobe and get ready for more glitz and glam than you could ever imagine!

Winter Berries

When you think of  Christmas party makeup, chances are that a classic red lip will spring to mind- the unsung hero of all Christmas party makeup looks- so it seems rude not to mention it. You could stick to what you know, but a berry, vampy lip and long lash combo is all the rage Christmas party makeup Winter Berrythis party season. You might be tempted to pair your dark lip up with a smoky eye, but Shay Mitchell’s fresh, modern take on the winterberry lip has shown us that it is possible to look fresh and cool as hell in dark lipstick. When it comes to this look, lip liner is a girl’s best friend- with the exception of a heavy-duty lip balm to avoid the curse of the chapped lips. Pick out a lip liner that seamlessly matches your lipstick colour of choice and carefully carve out your lip-line before applying your lipstick with a light hand. To mimic Shay’s vampy winter berry makeup look, keep your base light and your eye makeup even lighter. Shay paired her glossy, burgundy lip with a strong contour and a set of long, fluttery lashes, leaving her with an overall sultry, yet festive, feel. Are you brave enough to rock this daring makeup look at your Christmas party?

Christmas party makeup tree

Christmas Tree Realness

The unspoken rule of creating a perfect balance between your eye makeup and lip colour is being thrown out with the old Christmas decorations this year. Be the life and soul of the Christmas party with a bold eye look matched with a statement lip. In the spirit of Christmas, try out new, daring combinations that pull you straight out of your comfort zone. We can’t find a combination of shades that are more associated with the Christmas season than green and red, so don’t shy away from playing with colours and give everyone the Christmas tree realness they deserve. If you’re not brave enough to go for a solid, bold green eye look, add a pop of green to your waterline or lash line to give a festive twist to your christmas party makeup without going OTT.

Yas Ice Queen

Winter is coming, and that means it’s time to channel your inner ice queen. Up the ante on Christmas Party Makeup Snowflakeyour classic blue toned smoky eye with festive artwork that is sure to bring the party feel this Christmas. Using a snowflake as an accent to your eye look will add a subtle pop of festivity. This may seem like an unnecessary step for the Scrooge’s out there, but we think that there are no limits to creativity at Christmas. To recreate this striking seasonal eye look, stick with a classic blue, white and silver combo to perfectly reflect the classic winter colours. Focus the blue on the outer corner of your eye and the silver in the inner portion to create a seamless transition of colours. Use a white, thin eyeliner to give yourself as much precision as possible when creating your snowflake – a steady hand is essential to perfecting this kind of design. If you want to take your look to the next level, use a highlighter with a blue undertone to give yourself an inner frosty glow fit for an ice queen and, of course, douse yourself in glitter.

Now that we’ve given you some Winter inspiration, it’s time to unleash your imagination and create your own glam Christmas party makeup looks. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

3. Fill the circles with white acrylic paint, leaving a thin outline around the edge of the circle.
4. Fill the white section with multiple bright colours. Repeat steps 2 to 4 to fill the whole nail.
5. Write “M” with white acrylic paint in the middle of each circle.

With every October comes the same dreaded decision about what you’re going to dress up as. Clown Halloween Makeup

The Colourful Clown

This colourful clown look is incredibly simple to create – perfect for those of you leaving your costume to the last minute. There is no need to be light handed with your application, a bit of smudged lipstick here and there will only add to the look. When it comes to Halloween makeup, lips are sadly often neglected. The Halloween lip art possibilities are endless, from slapping on all the blood and gore you can get your hands on to art inspired by your favourite spooky characters. Forget the Setting Spray

Melting Face Halloween Makeup

I’m sure none of us can forget the ‘melting face’ makeup trend that took the internet by storm in 2016 and guess what ladies, it’s making a comeback. Whether you want to look like a melted ice cream or you’re opting for something straight out of a horror film, the only supplies needed for this look is foundation and scar gel and you’ll be melting like butter on toast. This is the only time where you will be intentionally encouraging your makeup to melt off,  so forget the setting spray and go in hard. Photo credit to @desiperkins

The latest Autumn and Winter beauty trends

644 429 Vanity Van

There are many beauty trends that have dominated the catwalks this year, but it’s hard to tell what trends are going to work for you and how to transition them from season to season. Although certain trends can look terrifying, there are ways to pull inspiration from them while still looking subtle and sophisticated.

Block eye colour beauty trendsReturn of the Club Kid

Despite the crisp Autumn months dawning upon us, we are happy to report that bright and bold eye looks are not going anywhere. Although this trend might take you back to the era of the club kid, the classic 80’s leg warmers and spandex will not be making their way back into our wardrobes. From lime green to vivid purples, the graphic eye trend can only be tackled by the bravest of us. Are you brave enough to rock this technicolour trend?

Lash it Up

When you think of an ultra-feminine makeup look, a long, full set of lashes are almost always in the mix. For this season, if you’re going to wear mascara, it’s a matter of all or nothing. Whether you decide to go for a bold makeup look, or opt for natural, feminine beauty, an extra layer of mascara is guaranteed to bring your look to the next level. As long as you wear it with confidence, anyone can pull off this trend.

Statement lipstick beauty trends

Statement Lips

A bold statement lip is always in style, and that isn’t changing as we transition into Autumn. As a true makeup visionary, Rihanna is an avid fan of a vibrant lip, giving us the red lip fantasy we all needed, but didn’t deserve. For those of you looking to pack a punch with your lip colour this autumn, draw some inspiration from Fenty Beauty’s leading lady and paint on that classic red pout. From bright oranges to deep berry shades, statement lip colours are a must-have for your Autumn makeup bag.

Slicked back hair beauty trends

Slicked Back Sophistication

It is no surprise that slicked back hair and slicked side partings have been all the rage this year. Who isn’t a fan of a stylish, wearable and hassle-free hairstyle? Pulled back hair with loose waves has become the epitome of sophisticated, effortless beauty. Plus, if you get caught in the rain, no one will be able to tell the difference. To achieve this look, apply a hair mousse rather than a gel to avoid the dreaded greasy locks look and achieve a smooth, sleek finish.

Which of these Autumn/Winter beauty trends will you be trying out this season?

Summer hair – sexy sassy and effortless

955 955 Vanity Van

Second in our summer series our team have pulled together some ideas to create that sexy summer hair look that takes minimal effort and gives maximum impact.

summer hairThe key to sexy summer hair is sun-dried locks, messy buns, textured braids and natural waves to keep you looking chic in the summer heat. One quick way to achieve this just stepped off the beach look is to use salt spray and a diffuser to create natural waves without over styling, this will provide a base for any summer styles you wish to achieve.

To create a wet look and look like a goddess who has just stepped out of the sea. Comb through a high gloss pomade. For anyone of any hair type looking to try out this trend, wear your mane down or slick it straight back for a more edgy look.

An easy to create style from the beach waves is the funky chignon- a chignon traditionally involves a sleek twist with tucked in ends the summer version is way less serious. Just twist smaller sections of hair at the top of the head and pin with bobby pins.

Another quick to create style is the messy top knot recently sported by Kendal Jenner at Coachella.

For those feeling a little more adventurous try a fishtail braid loose at the crown – a fishtail braid becomes even more mermaid-like with wispy strands.

And don’t forget you can always upgrade any style this summer with chunky glitter to give you that extra festival bling.

Summer makeup looks perfect the sunkissed look

639 673 Vanity Van

First in our blog series of summer looks our team have come up with some simple summer makeup hints and tips so you can recreate the latest looks.

The key to summer makeup starts with that elusive lit-from-within dewy skin glow. We all want it, and we’ve all at some point or another tried to get it by slathering on glitter filled makeup products that promise a J low glow – but end up looking more like a disco ball!. Dewy skin looks natural and youthful – to master this look you will need a good quality foundation and an excellent skincare regime. Ensure you exfoliate, use a hydrating moisturiser and drink plenty of water.

summer makeupBegin by using a glowing primer to ensure the skin glows from underneath your foundation. Sparingly apply a lightweight foundation or bb cream using a tapping motion and a damp beauty blender – blend, blend and blend some more.

For areas that require more coverage apply a liquid concealer dabbing gently with a finger for perfect coverage. Set any shiny areas with a translucent pressed powder. Add some liquid bronzer to areas that naturally catch the sun to warm up the skin and give a super sun-kissed glow. Finish with some rosy peachy pink cream blush to the apple of the cheeks and dab the same colour onto the lips for a natural lip stain. A touch of highlighter on areas which catch the light such as the tops of the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and just above the brows and cupids bow will offer that sun-kissed shimmer – however, remember for this look less is more!

summer makeup
Apply an eyeshadow primer to your lids before applying any eye makeup – without a primer your shadow will crease. For an easy eye look, apply a wash of shimmery eyeshadow all over the lids, use a neutral, bronze tone, finishing the look with your favourite mascara.

Set the look with a finishing spray to hold the summer glow in place for those balmy evenings. Allowing your inner beauty to shine through…

Even with the pressure of her role as a royal to be and planning a royal wedding Meghan Markle manages to keep her skin radiant and glowing and her natural make up look on flick. We have delved into Meghan’s beauty routine to try and understand her secrets and can reveal some of her favourite makeup and beauty products…

1. Kate Somerville Quench hydrating face serum – whether she’s hanging out with Prince Harry or spending Christmas dinner with Queen Elizabeth II, Meghan Markle always has a glow about her.

2. Laura Mercia illuminating primer. – Meghan doesn’t wear foundation unless she’s filming so uses this cult product after moisturiser to give her skin a dewy glow. Lydia Sellers her former hair and make up artists said even when she has to be made up she has been known to ask ‘Can we just make sure my freckles are peeking through? I don’t want a ton of foundation,'” so she used the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation with a Beautyblender to create her dewy look.

Royal Wedding Meghan Markle beauty secrets

3. Diorshow Iconic Mascara – Meghan eyes are arguably one of her best features, and in order to accentuate them she swears by using an eyelash curler first to open up the eyes then lashings of Dior mascara adding volume and definition.

4. Charlotte Tilbury’s matte revolution lipstick – in very Victoria, is Meghans go to. Its a beautiful natural taupe nude shade to compliment her glowing skin. These days for that extra royal touch she also loves to add a little shine to her lips. We cannot wait to see what look she goes for at the Royal Wedding.

5. Nars Orgasm blusher – Megan even has her naughty side – she once told Beautybanter that she can’t live without Nars’ Orgasm, the “perfect rosy flush tone that brightens the face.” We love this about her!

6. Tea tea oil – Meghan revealed she can’t travel without it! It’s not the most glamorous thing, but if you get a cut, a mosquito bite, a sudden breakout, no matter what it is ‘it’s my little cure all Meghan said.

7. Kerestase relax treatment – Hair wise the press went wild when she wore a low messy bun that looked like she had done it herself for her engagement photos – we love her relaxed style. Her hair and make up artist used Oribes volumizing spray to prep the hair and give it a boost and a Kerestase relax treatment to keep things smooth.

So for this weekends Royal Wedding celebrations in honour of this natural beauty bring out your inner princess Megan and rock a natural dewy look with stunning voluminous lashes, a rosy flush and nude shiny lips.

Cruelty-free and vegan beauty tips

Alexandra Soame The Energy DJWith the huge push in today’s society towards transitioning to a cruelty-free and vegan diet, the next obvious step is to consider what products you should purchasing and using.

Our founder Alexandra Soame has transitioned to a vegan lifestyle a year and a half ago and is championing our companies transition by ensuring all new sponsors and products purchased are vegan and cruelty-free.

Check out Alexandras instagram The Energy DJ for hints and tips for a plant-based diet and her facebook group Vegan Curious for more help regarding this subject. It can, however, be tricky to figure out which products contain animal ingredients or have been tested on animals at some stage in the production process.

cruelty-free and veganChoosing Vegan and cruelty-free cosmetics is not only beneficial for the animals and the environment, its also better for your health as these products use plant and mineral based ingredients which have natural properties and they are also preservative and pesticide free.

What does cruelty free and vegan mean?

A product can be vegan without being cruelty-free and vice-versa, the definition of a vegan product is a product that doesn’t contain any animal by-products. A good example is that a vegan lipstick should never contain beeswax as this is derived directly from bees. To most people, the term vegan should also imply that the product isn’t tested on animals however this isn’t regulated so be careful. A product can be tested on animals and still legally claim to be vegan.

cruelty-free make up

A product that is labelled cruelty-free should have been produced without any form of animal testing in the creation and the production process or use ingredients that have been tested on animals by third parties. To be sure keep an eye out for these official logos – ‘the leaping bunny’ ‘PETAS cruelty-free logo’ and choose cruelty-free logo.

What to look out for…

Avoid these animal by-products that are often found in cosmetics:

  • Collagen – often used in anti-aging products due to its plumping and firming effects. In order to get the protein it is normally taken from dead animals bones, connective tissue, and skin…definitely not vegan!
  • Beeswax – this is taken directly from the beehive and can be used in eye shadow, foundation or lipstick
  • Carmine – this deep red colour is taken from crushed insect body and legs
  • Keratin- used to give you luscious hair this is a protein that Is naturally found in mammals, it is generally taken from hair, nails, and horns
  • Guanine – This gives extra shine and sparkle to your blusher, eyeshadow and nail polish, it is created by scraping fish scales off dead fish and soaking them in alcohol to create an iridescent solution
  • Lanolin -used in lip balms and lotions, it is created from the grease in sheeps hair
  • Squalane – Used in various moisturisers and cosmetics this ingredient is made from the oils found in the liver of sharks

We will be running more features in the future on our attempts to improve the ecological aspects of our businesses and some exciting developments coming soon regarding our new health and wellbeing brand!

Chocolate Lip Scrub DIY

Our lips are still suffering the effects of winter, and are looking a little parched. Here’s a super quick and easy recipe for a homemade scrub to banish the chapped lips, just in time to make the most of spring lippie shades!

Ingredients:
3 tablespoons Dark Cocoa
1½ cups granulated sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
⅓ cup grapeseed oil

Simply mix all your ingredients together. To store, pop mixture into small jars (this scrub makes a gorgeous Easter gift too!)

To use:
Apply to your lips and gently rub in a circular motion for about a minute, then either wipe off or lick your lips (just try to resist eating the entire jar)

Chocolate Hair Dyenutella hair dye easter chocolate beauty trends

So, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re probably aware of a certain well known chocolate spread going viral after a video emerged of it being used as a hair-dye by a hairdresser in Dubai. Obviously, we had to check it out, and it turns out that Nutella truly CAN be used to tint light blonde hair temporarily. If you are after a hazelnut hue (pun intended) to calm a brassy blonde, then this mixture of Nutella and condensed milk, may be for you. However, whilst the oils in Nutella are certainly beneficial to hair, one must wonder if it is worth the hassle and the wastage of a perfectly good snack! We remain undecided on this one!

Chocolate Face Mask

We all love to eat it but what about putting chocolate on your skin? I don’t know about you but our team were a little dubious. However, research has shown that flavonoids found in dark chocolate absorb UV light, help improve blood flow to the skin, and improve the skins hydration and complexion!

Home made chocolate face masks are very easy to make just create a paste with 2-3 tablespoons of dark cocoa powder and 2-3 tablespoons of natural yoghurt. The yoghurt contains lactic acid to help unclog pores. Apply this to your face with clean fingertips and let it sit for 10-15 mins before washing off.

Top Tip: for extra hydration, try adding a spoonful of mashed avocado to your mix!

As if we needed any further excuse to slather ourselves in chocolate, head to toe!
