We featured at Radio 2 festival in a day 2013 yesterday and it literally does what it say on the tin squeezing in 10 fabulous acts in one afternoon and evening with some glorious blasts from the past from the bands to the presenters alike.
We had a salon set up backstage outside the dressing rooms in the heart of the action tending to the artists and all the Radio 2 presenters. The weather was erratic with beaming sunshine one minute and pouring rain and high winds the next. Leaving us inundated with requests to tend to rain lashed locks and smudged eye make up.
We loved the quaintness of the festival a perfect pocket sized slice of heaven which people treated as a giant picnic with people bringing trestle tables, picnic baskets and blankets aplenty! The presenters coming on stage between the acts to announce the next artists is a lovely touch and Jo Whiley commented to us when she popped in for a Miners cosmetics manicure that its not often all the presenters actually get together like this and it felt a hit like a school reunion of sorts! I suppose its a bit like the big weekend bash for the Radio 1 guys! And talking of radio bashs soon we soon get to embark on the 1xtra tour am sure that will be an eventful week full of stories…
Our weekend started with a call to rush down to Proms in the park on Saturday to give the fabulous Bryan Ferry a much needed deep tissue massage just before his set we dashed our finest therapist and massage table to the site only to find he has his own massage table apparently he is a connoisseur and has one every day ! We bumped into Anton du Beck who performed on stage and our therapist mistook him for Rob Brydon! Well they do look alike… We caught a flashing smiles a plenty from both Simon Webb and Lee Ryan From Blue as the cheeky chaps were warming up for their set backstage, Duncan also looked stunning as always… Where as Antony always seems to look a little furtive especially as he had a bevy of girl admirers in tow. Lee even jokingly told off our therapist for interrupting his chances with a girl he was laying the moves on. However our most surreal moments of the evening were bumping into Tony Blackburn in full gold sequin get up including matching flares and having a meeting sat next to Dame Edna Everage tucking into her dinner!
Sunday we opened the full salon. Presenters such as Sally Boazman booked in and joked with us that it would take a ton of products to help her – we primped and preened saving her ruined hair do with some XXL volume Batiste dry shampoo and lashings of miners cosmetics she loved her Luxe lips cream gloss beauty queen so much she took it with her. She waxed lyrical after her treatment saying “you made me look young!”
Vanessa Feltz was incredibly fabulous darling… she swooped onto the site in a furore of glory in a stretch limo with daughter Saskia and dashing Boyf Ben in tow. In tribute to her impending starring role in Strictly come dancing she was resplendent in a gold sequin full ball gown outshining all the other festival attired presenters. She was a hoot to chat to and we curled her lovely hair with plenty of Nicky Clarke hold and shine spray to ensure it stayed put and brought her eyes out with our Miners Love Phat Black Liner. She is uber excited about strictly and we were joking around about dancing in ice she scoffed “it was hard enough to pull it off on terra firmer darling” – we can’t wait to see how she does.
Elaine Page was very forthright and a little miffed as it was so chilly when she came into our alfresco salon I swathed her in blankets to keep her warm during her treatments. Luckily she only needed a little touch up so we used some Batiste XXL plumping powder to give her hair volume and touched up her eyes with Miners Safari eye shadow and define and line liner. She obvs loved the blankets as she walked off with it leaving her r2 umbrella behind fair swap i think. Although kindly got one of her team to return it to us later what a love.
Ex Blue Peter presenter Diane Jordan was lovely and we conducted a full Miners make over on her bringing out her brown eyes with the Safari eye shadow and some weather proof waterproof Maxi Mascara. We were chatting about festivals and she promised to look us up at Glastonbury next year.
And it was a joy to meet the beautiful Anneka Rice who looks exactly like she did 20 yrs ago. She was so easy to pamper as she is so stunning she only needed a little Batiste Hint of Blonde Dry Shampoo and some Nicky Clarke Hold and Shine Hair spray to hold everything in place in the breeze – so many childhood idols don the air at radio 2 it was fabulous to meet them all…
We had most of Texas in for much needed massages including their bass player Ross who said we came along at exactly the right time as his shoulders were tight after the gig and he was totally sorted out by Debbies healing hands. Lead singer Sharleen Spiteri popped by to say hi sporting a gorgeous new choppy hair do. She later accidentally swore at the crowd in a bid to fire them up a bit – whoops…
James blunt was hilarious and so much smaller than we thought he would be in the flesh! He riled up the crowd demanding they let loose as if they did he would do a stage dive into the crowd and true to his word he did finishing off his set by dancing on his piano ! He definitely needed a massage after all that…
Jessie J’s and her crew had an entire production area to themselves and we had her whole band in for treatments including Miners Plum mini manicures for her keyboardist Hannah and touched up her rained on frizzy hair with a touch of Batiste dark brown hint of colour and Nicky Clarkes weightless treatment with Argan Oil. Her backing singer Phoebe had a eye makeup done to match her purple hair and fell in love with our Miners Phat pencil Snob with a dash of Tin of Tint Cherry for luscious pouting lips.
Simple Minds were second on the bill and our thrilled masseuse who is a huge fan got to massage the drummer and the bass player after their set. The cheeky boys from the Treacherous Orchestra who looked uber daper in their suits and zoot suit styles white and black ties spent the last couple of hours with us having hair cuts, restyles both finished off with Nicky Clarkes Matt Grooming wax. One of them even had a Miners deep cherry manicure and ‘goth’ lips he looked hilarious but strangely very cool.
Our favourites music wise were the melodic Jack Johnson whos soothing tones calmed the crowds and hypnotised everyone although we were disappointed to hear only 2 of his well known tracks. And all time legends Manic Street Preachers tore up the stage with classics such as Design for Life sending the crowds wild – loved their Welsh flag behind them on stage very patriotic. The therapist team were entranced listening to the ducit tones of Josh Groban drifting into the backstage area. Most of his crew popped in for cuts, massages and general touch ups – and I was shocked to hear Flying without wings as had no idea he was responsible for such Westlife classics.
Smokey Robinson didn’t fail to impress closing the festival in a flurry of fireworks he dropped such classics as My Girl and Since I lost my baby. He had the crowd in the palm of his hand and did some fantastic fun sing alongs at the end to bring the festival to a beautiful close. We met his saxophonist Ken who had a relaxing massage and his lovely backing singer Serena before they went on stage who we jazzed up with some Miners hot pink It Girl luxe lips and some stardust eye shadow.
A fantastic end to a fantastic event one which I am sure will now feature as a must on our annual calendar every year from here on in.
