The third of its kind the 1xtra Live tour celebrates the biggest talents in Dance, R&B and Hip Hop taking us on a whistle stop tour of 4 cities in 4 days.
We had our backstage salon set up in the heart of the action each day working closely with the artists, their crews and the 1xtra presenters
The 1xtra live tour kicked off in style with a dance fueled energetic lineup featuring hit makers Chase and Status performing a DJ set, Digital Sound boy, Katy B and the epic Sub focus showcasing his Torus stage show – mind blowing visuals to accompany a hard hitting set.
Digital Sound Boy had the likes of Radio 1’s BTraits DJing and Elizabeth Troy singing both of who came in to see us for multi treatments. We styled Elizabeth with some jazzy Miners Mango Tango nails and treated her locks with some Batiste XXL plumping spray to give her some on stage bounce. BTraits, whos gorgeous lilac locks were due to be dyed the following day to a stunning purple, we created soft curls and touched up her make up with some delicious Miners Mood gloss to give her that perfect pink pout.
Other visitors backstage included Katy B and her dancers. Katy being the perfect candidate for a spritz of Batiste Hint of Colour Red she asked us to plait her hair into a French style double plait. Her dancers all had hair restyling’s and make up retouches before they hit the stage for an energetic set.
We even got to rub down man of the hour Nick Douwma, otherwise known as Subfocus. He was a total gent and declared our masseuse Stacey was “amazing”…
Londons Hammersmith Apollo was the next stop and what a venue this was – a complete rabbit warren of tunnels, winding staircases and hidden rooms. The venue was literally buzzing with the artists and stars who had come down to support the tour.
Tues featured stella producer Naughty Boy and an entourage of no less than 45 people. Organisers put them in their own huge room complete with pool table although there were concerns this wouldn’t contain everyone and their antics. Famous faces such as Professor Green, Emilie Sande, John Newman were on hand to support the A class collaborator. Naughty Boy himself swung by for a beard trim and a hair cut before he hit the stage looking dapper to face the crowds.
Other visitors into the salon included the controversial Angel Haze, who admitted she hadn’t slept for three days. She came in with best friend Charlotte for massages to take the edge off. Later jumping into the crowd during her set to watch her own singers perform on stage.
Sean Paul in true epic rapper style had no less than 8 bottles of Courvoisier brandy stashed in his dressing room – which we are sure resulted in one serious after party.
Next stop was the Liverpool Echo arena where the star of the show was undoubtedly Nelly – the muscle man didn’t fail to disappoint with hit after hit and was the man everyone wanted to talk to or have a picture with backstage. Such a formidable presence and he took Liverpool by storm hitting club Medication with John Newman and 1xtra presenters such as Sarah Jane Crawford in tow after his set. They pulled an all nighter we believe rolling in first thing the following day to the Liverpool BBC radio studios to tell all to Grimmy for his morning show.
Robin Thicke was an interesting character his harem of infamous dancers all excitedly popped in to see us for products and to chat about touring. He gave a smooth performance which was in stark contrast to the other acts of the evening.
John Newman – this man has an amazing hair cut – we would love to get our hands on it. He is a serious mover on stage pulling some amazing shapes. They made a huge night of it – he even admitted to playing bowls with wine bottles and fruit in his dressing room.
The surprise guest was the talk of the night – everyone including ourselves was convinced it was going to be Pharrell – but we couldn’t be disappointed when we discovered it was going to be Tinie Tempah – he gave an energetic 10 minute set which got the crowd going wild.
Iggy Azealea as always looked stunning, a few of her dancers popped in for nail treatments and products – she was a naughty girl though and swore on stage so some of her footage had to be side stepped….
It was lovely to bump into Grimmy again and he had great fun backstage and bopping away with us all to Nelly at the side of the stage. His morning show the next day was an awesome round up of all the performances and he had everyone in for interviews and laughs – they should have done this for every location!
Our favourite night of all had to be the Leeds arena. An epic line up of Rudimental, Wretch 32, Azealia Banks, Chronixx and Stylo G finished the tour with a bang.
Rudimental’s main producers Amir and Piers popped in for their regular trims which we finished off with a spritz of Batiste hint of colour dark brown to ensure they were stage ready even their new tour manager got involved with a beard trim! They told us all about their new tour which has just started and with oz already under their belts they are Hitting the uk hard these next two weeks finishing off with a big showcase at Brixton. Their singers Becky and Sinead weren’t there and they explained that’s because they need to rotate then to make sure they don’t damage their voices. The 20 strong team were in residence most of the day and even set up a studio in one of their dressing rooms so they could make some music whilst they were there ! Now that’s dedication..
There was a definite reggae tip on this day – Reggae is having a huge renaissance at the moment and I am Chronixx is at the forefront of this. He was celebrating his 21st birthday and was serenaded on stage by the crowd. Being a Rasta he celebrated with extra Aubergine Bake provided by catering.
We had the gorgeous Yasmin Evans and Tiny T 1xtra breakfast presenters swing by for chats. We beautified Yasmin with a Miners Molten manicure and some Miners bright red fluro gloss. Shakka also came in for his regular massage and at one point had a fun three way involving a simultaneous manicure, massage and ear nibble from the lushcious Yasmin.
A last minute request from the BBC saw us ageing up 1xtra DJ Charlie Sloth for a time machine skit for the red button footage. This was an unusual use for Batiste dry shampoo but it worked – top tip for Halloween…
Wretch 32 was his usual gentlemanly self his crew are always up for a laugh and we had his drummer Luke in for a full body rub down and a hair cut before he hit the stage for a seriously energetic performance. His singer Coco also came in for some stage glitz and we used Miners Gold dip and define to highlight her eyes. We even caught up with Wretch and Stylo G at the after party at Chillies where he was sipping neat Disaronno and boogieing away to Toddla T’s set.
