Sustainable beauty – how to go green with your beauty routine

150 150 Vanity Van

Waste free sustainable beautyIt’s no secret that the beauty industry takes a toll on the environment, whether it’s non-recyclable packaging, unethical sources or water waste. Here at Vanity Van, we’ve decided to look at our entire product range this year to determine how we can adapt it to make it sustainable for the environment. Now we’re encouraging you to do the same! In the quest for sustainable beauty, we’ve compiled a list of products that will reduce your carbon footprint, without having to compromise on the luxuries.

With a whole range of gel, foam and cream cleansers on the market, it’s difficult to pick the one that’s right for you. Welcome to our new summer skincare obsession: powdered cleansers. While definitely not new, powdered cleansers have recently been on our beauty radar, not only for their cleansing and exfoliation properties, but also for their sustainability. Simply place the product in the palm of your hands, add water and then mix until you’ve achieved your ideal texture and lather. Powdered cleansers don’t contain any water, so all active ingredients remain undiluted, and because they’re dry, which means they last longer. The majority are made from sustainably harvested essential oils, and are packaged in a recycled and recyclable refill package, meaning that your skin remains clean and nourished without impacting the environment. We couldn’t ask any more of a cleanser!

Shampoo bars are a revolutionary product that will take you one step closer to establishing a sustainable beauty hair care routine. These bars are more concentrated than traditional shampoos so you can use less product per hair wash, saving you money and extra trips to the shop when your (sustainable) dry shampoo is no longer cutting it. If you need more convincing, there is no need for plastic packaging as most shampoo bars come wrapped in recycled paper or in paper boxes, occasionally needing no packaging at all. While many traditional shampoos are jam packed with with preservatives and chemicals that can strip hair of its natural oils, shampoo bars contain essential oils and natural ingredients so you can say goodbye to injecting harmful chemicals into your hair and the environment.

Sustainable Beauty Shampoo BarOne major area of the beauty industry has been overlooked is water waste. Water-free skincare products are the eco-friendly step that your sustainable beauty regime is missing, one of our favourites being the game-changing dry sheet mask. A sheet mask is typically a thin sheet drenched with serum, but with a dry sheet mask, active ingredients are infused into the fabric, meaning there’s no need for water in the formulation. Without water, fewer preservatives are needed. While the concept may seem strange, these dry sheet masks will instantly amp up your skincare game, providing hydration for your skin without any water waste.

How are you planning on making your beauty routine more sustainable?

We’re taking it back to basics with this pastel gradient French tip nail design by @hannahroxit as it’s incredibly easy for beginners to perfect, yet it screams “I just left the nail salon”.  You can choose to go with a monochromatic gradient look, or you can create a swoon-worthy colour melt effect by incorporating different colours.

  2. Easter Nails Pastel Gradient French TipPlace a piece of scotch tape across the nail, as close to the white polish as possible.

  5. Remove the tape and, using a fine nail art brush, carefully sculpt the french tip and clean up any excess polish on the skin.
  6. Apply a generous coat of top coat to your final look to protect your nails and give it a glossy, shiny finish.

The ultimate Mother’s Day self-care guide

1024 891 Vanity Van

Prioritising self-care is not always easy, especially as a working Mum, but it’s important to take the time you need for rest and self-restoration. This Mother’s Day, we encourage you to create space to take care of yourself, whether it’s just for an hour of relaxation or an extended pamper weekend.

Mother's Day Manicure close upA simple way to infuse some self-love into your daily routine is by creating small luxuries that you can work into your everyday life. No time or money for a manicure? We get it. Thankfully, we have gotten our hands on a luxurious DIY hand lotion recipe that can serve as a low-maintenance care package for yourself, on Mother’s Day and all year round.

Ingredients:

  • 120ml sweet almond oil
  • 60ml coconut oil
  • 2tbsp shea butter
  • 10-20 drops of essential oils

Set up a bowl over a pot of gently simmering water and add the almond oil, coconut oil, and shea butter to the bowl. If you are adding essential oils, add them in at this point and give the ingredients a mix. Pour the mixture into any jar or container that you wish to store it in, and let it cool. This recipe is perfect for keeping your hard-working hands moisturised, and is a great option for a quick pick-me-up each day.

Mother's Day foot care

As important as your feet are, they are usually only thought of when there is a problem with them. So, some tootsie TLC to treat tired, worn-out feet is the perfect treat to indulge in on Mother’s Day. Begin by soaking your feet in warm water for 5 minutes and scrub with a gentle exfoliator to remove the excess dead skin. For tough, stubborn areas, invest in a diamond crystal roller, or a pumice stone as a cheaper alternative, and apply gentle pressure to remove all hard skin and replenish the area. Push back the cuticles of your toenails with a metal cuticle pusher and rub cuticle oil in with your fingers. Slather on a generous layer of foot cream to your feet and heels and immediately chuck on the fluffiest pair of socks you can find to lock in the moisture.

Mo

Having a warm, fragrant salt bath is a wonderful way to relax and soothe sore, tired muscles, especially if you’re a busy, working Mum. The pre-game is very important here, so make sure to dial in to whatever self-care settings apply to you. While your bath is bubbling away, we suggest lighting candles and switching on an inspiring podcast to shift your mindset and mood. The key to the perfect bath is using a mixture of salts and oils which will give you the perfect balance of aromatics and hydration. For this, we have the perfect DIY bath salt recipe which will not only fill your bathroom with a heavenly scent, but will also rehydrate your skin with a burst of essential oils.

Ingredients:

 – 230ml rock salt or sea salt & 230ml epsom salts

– 2 tablespoons bicarbonate of soda & 10- 15 drops of essential oil

Simply mix together the salts in a glass mixing bowl and sift in the bi-carbonate of soda. Add your essential oil of choice, and mix the salts together thoroughly. When it comes to putting your creation to the test, dissolve a handful of bath salts under running water, and lay back and relax!

Follow our hints and tips this Mother’s Day and your self-care barometer will be off the chart! Which of these will you be testing out?

Valentine’s day hair and make up get the look

1024 1024 Vanity Van

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to step out of your usual make-up and hair comfort zone and crank up the romance. Whether you’re a hopeless romantic, or an anti-valentines villain, these looks are sure to be a head turner this Valentine’s Day.

Go sexy

A cat eye is a classic, sultry look that is perfect for a Valentine’s Day date night, or a night out on the town with your girl gang. Using a jet black liquid or gel eyeliner, follow along the edge of your eyeshadow to create an angle and drag it back to your lash-Valentine's Day Sexy Lookline to create the perfect wing. If winged eyeliner isn’t your forte, use a deep brown eyeshadow and repeat the same steps, but diffuse the colour by blending the wing into the outer corner and crease of your eye.

As a classic cat eye is the ultimate sexy makeup look, it is only fitting that we pair it with a tousled, sexy bed hair look. To achieve this effortless “I just got lucky” hair look, begin by adding a volumizing mousse to damp hair and blow dry using a round brush head. Taking big sections of your hair, curl with a 1.5″ curling iron before brushing out your work loosely. Polish off the look by backcombing at the crown of your head and seal the deal with a coating of extra hold hairspray. Although this hairstyle takes a while to perfect, it looks so effortless that your date will be none the wiser.

Go romantic

This Valentine’s Day, if you wanna crank up the romance, why not go for the ‘no-makeup makeup’ look? Keep your eyes minimal by dusting a light wash of colour over your eyelids, such as a reflective gold or shimmery pink. For skin, begin by Valentine's Day Romantic Lookexfoliating and moisturising. Then, apply a glow-enhancing primer and follow up with an illuminating tinted moisturiser to give your date the illusion that you are glowing from within. If the ‘no-makeup’ look leaves you feeling a little too naked, pop on some individual lashes on the outer corner of your eye for a fluttery, flirty touch.

If you’re a fan of the classic romantic up-do, this is your chance to get creative with it by trying different techniques or by adding hair accessories for some extra glam. To create this simple, effortless look, begin by gathering your hair into a ponytail, making sure to leave a few strands of hair out. Make a bun out of your ponytail, either by using a hair doughnut, or if you’re lucky enough to have naturally thick locks, secure it with a hair elastic. Curl the strands at the front of your head loosely with a curling iron and secure a few of them towards the back of your head. This elegant bun is bursting with femininity and is sure to be a hit with your date.

Go vampy

If your look is more Dita Von Teese than Kate Winslet, the work is all in the prep. Are your lips ready to pucker up? Before applying your lipstick, use a gentle lip scrub to get rid of the dead skin cells and achieve the Valentine's Day Vampy Lookperfect pout. If you’re spending this Valentine’s day single, nothing quite says anti-valentine’s cheer like a dark, grunge lip, so whack on a lipstick as dark as your soul and show them what they’re missing. Team with a smoky dark eye to create a really vampy impact.

Kim Kardashian’s iconic sleek look is one of the most sought-after styles, making it perfect for Valentine’s Day. To achieve this look, start by running a small amount of serum through the ends of your hair. As you straighten your hair, the product will melt in, giving you the high-shine, poker-straight effect. Finally, polish off the look by spritzing some shine spray. Although this hairstyle may be the epitome of elegance and glamour, it can easily be vamped up with a dark lip and some staple pieces of jewellery for a date night look that’s out of the box.

What look will you be going for this Valentine’s Day?

Contouring Curve

To contour or not to contour – is the art of contouring dead?

427 440 Vanity Van

Popularised by A-listers, such as Kim Kardashian, and Instagram beauty influencers, contouring has quickly become one of the biggest beauty trends of the last few years. What was once a well-kept secret of celebrities and makeup artists has now become an everyday practice for the typical makeup obsessive. But like every trend that emerges from the beauty world, has contouring had its day?

Contouring naturalHere at VV we personally believe that it is here to stay, but in a much more subtle way. Say goodbye to the dramatic, ‘insta-famous’ way of face contouring and welcome a soft, bronzed contour that naturally shapes the face without it looking streaky or muddy. Pick a cool toned cream contour colour that compliments your skin-tone, making sure to steer clear of warm, orange tones to avoid the dreaded wotsit effect. Using a cream contour will allow the product to seamlessly blend into the skin, making it look natural and soft.

2019 is officially the year of the liquid highlighter. I’m sure we can all appreciate the difference a well-placed highlighter makes to our face shape. Opt for a high-shine version of your typical highlighter and strategically place it along the top of your cheekbone, temples and the bridge and tip of your nose. This will create the illusion of a slim, elongated face without having to cake your face with bronzer. When in doubt, turn to the glow.

One of the most common struggles when it comes to contouring is achieving professional results but in a way that is quick and Contouring Curveeasy. There are minimal tools available that offer a simple solution to creating the perfect contour, until the hero product of all beauty tools was born: Contour Curve. It is as simple as hooking the tool around your ear and pointing the tool towards your mouth which automatically lines it up with the hollows of your cheekbones. Then, apply your chosen contouring product, remove the tool and blend! We spoke to founder of Contour Curve, Michaela Chalk, who has worked with us in the past. “I want everyone to feel good with their makeup results whether it was a professional applying their makeup or they were doing it themselves.”

Contouring Beauty Tool

To achieve the ‘less is more’ look brands are shifting their focus towards skincare instead of cosmetics. A new skincare tool that has recently emerged on the beauty market is the infamous facial roller. One of the top brands on the market at the moment is Nurse Jaime pictured here. This beauty tool is said to give the skin an instant ‘uplift’, temporarily energising, enhancing and uplifting the skin. It was designed with the intention of mirroring the massage techniques used in a luxury facial, giving you glowy, plump, tightened skin while saving you time and money. To use simply follow your usual skincare routine and then use the ‘press and roll’ technique with the roller across your skin. This will also help the products you have applied to fully penetrate your skin and leave you with a freshly sculpted face, without the layers of product.

How do you feel about contouring? Do you think the beauty trend is here to stay?

Top beauty tips for a Winter recovery

1024 683 Vanity Van

Months of freezing cold temperatures and drying heating can leave skin in much need of some TLC. With Spring just around the corner, you may need a little extra help in nursing your skin and hair back to health. Vanity Van has put together a list of our top beauty tips on Spring time hair, nails and skin routines to aid you in your Winter recovery.

Condition your nails

Chilling winds and cold, dry air can cause havoc on our nails, leaving them flaky and damaged. So, what is the key to getting your nails back to their prime state? Our top beauty tip for nails is to apply a generous layer of organic nail oil daily to your nail bed and the skin around it will ensure that your nails are hydrated and your cuticles manageable. When the skin around your nails becomes cracked, applying fragranced products can actually worsen the area, so we would recommend opting for a non-fragranced, sensitive oil so we don’t anger the area even further.

Repair your locks

Washing your hair every day strips it of its natural oils, resulting in your locks crying out for a dose of moisture. If there’s anything you should be investing your pennies in this season, it should be a high-end conditioner. It not only helps to improve the look of dry, weather damaged hair but it also helps to control the frizz in humid conditions. Lastly, treat your hair to a weekly hair mask as it will not only act to re-nourish your hair after it has been exposed to cold temperatures, but it also prepares it for the heat of the upcoming seasons.

Plump your skin

While your skin would surely not have thanked you for a bit of overindulgence over the Winter months – its time to start anew with your skincare regime to help you to transition into spring in style. Blow the cobwebs off of your exfoliator and indulge in a thorough regular scrub to remove any dead skin cells. Why not push the boat out and invest in regular deep moisture facials to plump up your skin for the new year? And it goes without saying, the most obvious beauty tips for healthy, plump skin is to keep yourself hydrated with plenty of water.

New year new you: Vanity Vans top tips for beauty resolutions

1024 1024 Vanity Van

Typical New Year resolutions are comprised of vowing to complete dry January, beat laziness and hit the gym, or lose a few pounds. But have you ever thought how you could improve your beauty regime? We thought we would offer you some simple steps you can take to tackle your beauty habits and set new year beauty resolutions that will stick.

Give your make up brushes a spring clean!

If you’re an avid make-up wearer, you should be aware of the importance of keeping your brushes clean and how they can trigger unwanted breakouts when you skip this essential beauty routine. Product, oil, dirt and bacteria can get trapped in the bristles. Make a vow to regularly clean your brushes and erase the risk of clogged pores or pesky spots. The unsung hero for this job is baby shampoo, its gentle and won’t ruin the brush fibres.

Stop your hoarding

We are sure Marie Kondo will agree with us but tidying is not just for the wardrobe. Why not tackle your beauty products and make up collection?.  Using expired makeup and skincare products is akin to eating out of date food, so get ruthless and declutter your expired products. Getting rid of the products that are past their prime will give you more space and incentive to trial and test new products – ditch the old and welcome in the new.

Protect your skin!

Committing to wearing SPF everyday this new year, including the Winter months, is essential to protecting your skin from the unseen dangers of the sun. If you’re still scarred from the greasy, thick suncream from your childhood, there are suncreams on the market that are super lightweight and most foundations and BB creams contain a high SPF these days. If you think that SPF will ruin your chances of achieving a bronzed glow, a self-tanner for the face is the perfect alternative to a natural tan, without having to compromise the health of your skin.

How many of these New Year beauty resolutions will you be following, and do you have some of your own ?

New Year Hair Inspiration

683 1024 Vanity Van

As New Year quickly approaches, it’s out with the old and in with the new. With every season, you can always expect a new wave of hair trends to emerge, and this season it is no different. 2018 has handed us endless inspiration for salon-perfect hair while saving us the cash and the trip to the salon. We fell in love with the Kim Kardashian platinum blonde look, and we vowed to never talk about Katy Perry’s slime green pixie cut ever again. So, it’s time to reflect on the most-loved hairstyles of 2018 as we make our way into 2019 with party-perfect New Year hair.

The comeback of Old Hollywood glamour

It’s no myth that style, makeup and hair trends always come back around. Old Hollywood glamour is making a comeback and has been lusted over by a long list of a-listers, from the elegant and sophisticated Blake Lively to the modern and edgy Zendaya.

  1. New Year Hair Old HollywoodStart by creating a deep side parting in your hair to create volume and texture.
  2. Separate your hair into sections and curl towards your face to create soft, seamless curls.
  3. Once you release the hair from the curling iron, roll the curl into itself and pin loosely against your head.
  4. Continue curling all of the sections until your hair is completely pinned, and then allow your hair to cool to set the curls.
  5. Once all of your hair is curled, brush your curls out lightly and seal the deal with a light coating of hairspray to lock your finished, ultra-glamorous look into place.

Loose waves with a twist

New Year Hair PlaitEven in the cold winter months, loose, beach waves are universally coveted by virtually everyone. There are many different ways to achieve this look, from straighteners, to hair wands, and even a no-heat, no-damage option. If you’re no stranger to a low maintenance hair routine, then the no-heat method is a perfect alternative for you. While you’re hair is damp, strategically twist sections of your hair and secure them at the crown of your head. Let your hair down in the morning and you will have lust-worthy beach curls. If you want to seamlessly transition this look from day to night, opt for a centre French plait to add something ultra-dazzling to your New Year hair look. French plait your hair backwards and secure it at the crown of your head. As this style is incredibly versatile, you can either secure your hair in a ponytail or a messy bun.

Sleek slicked back hair

This perfect party New Year hair look has recently taken the red carpet by storm and is one that will work for any hair type and with any outfit.

  1. New Year Hair Slicked BackStart by combing a small amount of gel through your locks, pulling hair away from your face to achieve a slick, sleek effect.
  2. Spritz a firm-hold hairspray to lock all of your hard work in place.
  3. Alternatively, up the beauty stakes by keeping your hair dry and textured to add a more edgy feel to your look.
  4. Use a round brush head while blow-drying your hair upwards to achieve a voluminous, textured look.

Whether you’re going for understated elegance or edgy party girl this NYE, this hairstyle is sure to be a head turner.

Which of these hairstyles are you going to be rocking into 2019?
