Halloween Makeup Inspiration

The attire you choose is typically the focus of the night when Halloween rolls around, but it’s makeup that can really make, break or even suffice as a costume itself. With our help, you won’t be procrastinating, scrambling to find a last-minute costume or settling for the lazy girl go-to of cat ears and whiskers this yearFrom a technicolour twist on the classic film noir style makeup, to a ‘picture perfect’ protest on Insta-worthy beauty, we’ve rounded up 3 our favourite Halloween makeup looks which will only require a quick trip to the cosmetics aisle to pull off.

Instead of buying a full costume to create the ultimate alter-ego on Halloween, why not paint a disguise directly on to your face? A masquerade mask is the quintessential accessory for Halloween festivities, but why buy a mask when you can make one yourself? Begin by using a white liquid liner to lightly trace the shape of the mask onto your face. Fill in the blanks with a water-proof, long-wearing white paint and set it with a translucent powder, so your mask won’t budge until sunrise. Outline the mask with a black eyeshadow, smudging it onto the outer edges of the face to create shadow. Finish the look off with lashes, rhinestones, glitter and other accessories to make your Halloween makeup ultra-glamorous for this go big or go home holiday. If you want to amp up the spook factor, apply a red acrylic paint below the mask using a cotton bud to create the illusion of bleeding eyes.

Halloween Makeup InstaceptionInstagram has become the ultimate hub for all things beauty, but it can leave some of us feeling disheartened after scrolling through a feed of flawless, unattainable eye looks and perfectly carved eyebrows. Beauty bloggers have recently taken to social media to create an Insta-worthy eye look outlined with a hyper-realistic Instagram frame, as a bold statement about the pressures of social media. For Halloween this year, why not stand up in protest and interpret the ‘picture perfect’ look in your own way? To recreate this look by James Charles, dig out your florescent eyeshadows, shimmers and glitter and tap into your inner makeup artist to create a swoon-worthy eye look. Create a base and trace a square around the eye to mimic an Instagram picture frame. A bold and glamorous Halloween makeup look that also makes a statement? Say no more, we’re in!

Halloween Makeup Black and WhiteInstead of spending all of your money on one-time-use makeup products and spending hours practising and nailing your Halloween makeup look, we’ve come up with a look that requires minimal product and is surprisingly simple to pull off. To recreate this stunning look by @ellis_atlantischoose a light shade of grey to apply as your base and mix with white paint to highlight the higher points of your face. To create depth along the cheekbones, nose and jawline, choose a deep shade of grey and contour as usual. For the eyebrows and lips, opt for a deep shade of dark grey or black to make them pop against the light grey hue. While this monochromatic style makeup looks killer on its own, why not emulate the style of film noir with a pop of colour? Grab a stippling sponge and stipple different shades of paint around the eye, dragging it down to the cheek to create the illusion of tears drops. Whether you want to take on Halloween straight out of a 1950’s thriller, or amp it up with a technicolour twist, this look is sure to turn heads this holiday.

Which of these mesmerising makeup looks will you be trying out this Halloween?

Our 5 go-to beach beauty essentials- Hit the beach

564 706 Vanity Van

Beach Beauty Favourites

Whether you’re hitting the beach all day, or visiting on a late evening excursion, a trip to the beach calls for the perfect line-up of good books, cocktails on tap and, of course, a fool-proof batch of beach beauty products. Although packing your seaside essentials may seem like a walk in the park, you can never be too prepared when it comes to humidity, heat, sun and sand. We’re here to cover all bases so you don’t have to. From revitalising facial mist to must-have accessories, we’ve rounded up our beach beauty essentials to keep you polished and protected in the sun all day long.

  1. SPF: Of course we’re starting off with the holy-grail, ride or die product of beach beauty- SPF. No matter how much joy it brings, the sun is not your friend, so it’s important to load up on sun protection to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. It can be difficult to find a sunscreen that feels good, or one that doesn’t leave a white, chalky film, but our prayers have finally been answered. 2019 is the year of revolutionary beauty products, and with a plethora of SPF’s readily available in the high-street, our search for a non-greasy, weightless SPF has come to a halt. The key is to reapply often, as even water resistant formulas only last for a maximum of 80 minutes before wearing off. The perfect cocktail for your skin throughout a long Summer’s day!
  2. Cooling mist: In the hot summer sun, a facial mist is the perfect way to cool down and refresh your skin when you’re feeling frazzled. Stash a revitalising, purifying spray toner or cooling mist in your bag to give your face and body the hydration hit it needs throughout the day. It not only works to remove any dirt that may have built up throughout the day, but it also restores moisture to dry, congested skin, leaving you feeling fresh and reenergised to return to your beachside activities.
  3. Makeup wipes: Every girl is no stranger to a trusty makeup wipe, whether it’s for a quick and easy makeup removal after a night out, or as part of your lazy Sunday beauty regime. But, did you know they’re also perfect for a quick pick-me-up at the beach too? Even if you’re going au naturel, a makeup wipe will help you remove any sand, salt or sweat that may be clogging up your pores, instantly giving you a boost of freshness. Thankfully, there are a ton of biodegradable and reusable makeup wipes on the market that combine the convenience and practicality of a typical wipe, without harming the environment. A fresh face and a clear conscience!
  4. Sunglasses: Though sunglasses are a staple in completing any Summer look, they’re also essential for providing eye protection from the sun on a trip to the beach. They don’t only protect your eyes from harmful UV rays,  but they also reduce the risk of acquiring wrinkles due to squinting in the sun. Opt for a pair of sunglasses with wide frames that will provide your eyes with coverage, and if it has a high UV rating, that’s a huge bonus! Sun protection has never looked so fabulous.
  5. Beach beauty essentials Hair-care: Salt water and wind at the beach can leave your hair feeling a little lack-lustre and parched, while the sun can take a toll on your colour. If your hair has taken a beating from the salty waves, try spritzing in a detangler before tackling your tangles to ensure there isn’t any tugging or snapping of your hair. Follow up with a wet brush, designed specifically to comb through wet hair, leaving it tangle and frizz free. Hot and humid weather is a perfect recipe for frizzy hair, so if you need an extra hand keeping your frizz at bay, spray and smooth a de-frizzing product into hair. It not only tames fly-aways, but it also replenishes your hair’s natural oils, making it shiny and soft in the process.

How to avoid a Summer makeup meltdown – Long-lasting makeup tips

1024 683 Vanity Van

Long-lasting Summer Makeup When temperatures rise in the Summer months, you may think it’s pointless to even wear makeup. If your summer makeup is prone to sliding off your face by 2pm in the heat, we’ve got your back. We’ve rounded up a list of essential steps to ensuring your makeup remains locked in, even through the sweat. From primers, to blotting cushions, to lipstick layering, the beauty world has offered up some new products and techniques for you to try out this Summer.

A primer is the first step and an essential aspect of flawless summer makeup application. The purpose of a primer is to build an extra layer between your skin and your foundation, helping the product stick to the skin whilst brightening and smoothing the area. We know what you’re thinking… Why would I slather yet another layer of product onto my skin in the heat? If you have oily skin, an oil-free, mattifing primer can work wonders, especially around the t-zone area. If you’re not a fan of the fully matte look, concentrate an illuminating primer on your cheeks and temples to bring life back into skin. The combination of primers will instantly give you that much-needed radiance boost whilst eliminating any unwanted shine. You’ll be ready to take on the humidity all day long!

Summer Long-Wearing MakeupSay goodbye to pieces of greasy, scrunched up blotting papers taking refuge at the bottom of your bag, because a new blotting tool is taking the summer makeup world by storm: the game-changing miracle blotting cushions. Gently press the sponge across the problem areas on your face to smooth, absorb oils and keep your makeup fresh and shine-free all day long.

If you’re someone who loves a statement lip, you’ve no doubt spent time pondering how to make it last the entire day. The first port of call for making your lipstick last the day is layering it up. Although liquid lipsticks promise longevity, they have a tendency of cracking and flaking by the time the day is up. If you want to make a normal bullet lipstick last, apply a layer, blot off the excess and repeat as many times as you deem necessary. A lip-brush is crucial to the application process as they are designed to apply products with precision and to prevent them from smudging, leaving you with a smudge-proof pout.

Summer Makeup Lip BrushWe’ve been told time and again that setting spray is the hero product for shine control and smudge proof summer makeup. A setting spray should be the last step in your beauty regime to ensure that your makeup is locked in before you’re out the door. Keep your spray by your side while you’re out as just a few spritzes can instantly revive and refresh your makeup, giving the skin a well-needed pick-me-up during a humid day. Do you have any long-lasting makeup tips?

Pre and post workout essentials- our best gym beauty tips

1024 1024 Vanity Van

Pre and Post Workout Gym BeautyWhile we’re all for getting our sweat on, we’re not ready to sacrifice our beauty regime. We’ve compiled the ultimate guide for gym beauty pre-workout preparation and post-workout pampering for gym bag heroes, so you can look and feel refreshed before, throughout and after your gym session.

While it may be tempting to head straight to the gym from work with your full face of make-up on, this can cause the products to mix with the build-up of sweat, resulting in clogged pores and an uneven skin texture. Thankfully, there is a new crop of gym beauty and skincare products on the market that are guaranteed to outlive a sweat session, without effecting your skin. If you feel that your skin is looking a little dull and lack-lustre, a glow enhancing face lotion can provide light coverage, while quickly perking up and injecting radiance into your complexion. A glowing lotion is also perfect for applying after your gym session to amplify and enhance your post-work out glow.

After your workout, spritz on a cooling mist to replenish the moisture you lost while sweating. Opt for a cooling spray that contains cucumber extracts to cool and calm down your skin. A new gym beauty product that has taken the beauty sphere by storm is self-tanning water, the new revolutionary method of tanning at home. The transparent water hydrates the skin whilst it gradually tans, going on clear and transforming into a subtle glow. The lightweight feel of the water on the skin, along with the hydrating benefits and instant absorption, makes it a perfect product to use after working out, whilst making tanning feel like less of a chore. Who doesn’t love a multi-purpose product?

If your exercise shine wasn’t a burden enough, you may also get a severe case of post-workout red face. Created specifically for Gym Beauty Essentialsgym junkies, a yellow-toned primer will help to combat all redness before the problem even begins. It works as a quick fix before or after heading to the gym and can be used without the need for make-up on top, similar to a tinted moisturiser.

For when a primer isn’t enough to tackle that post-gym flush, game-changing colour-correcting loose powder has hit the shelves and will be your new best friend. A yellow toned powder will instantly calm redness, the yellow pigment and natural mineral working to neutralise redness and absorb excess oil and shine. Pop a light dusting over your problem areas before leaving the gym and everyone will be none the wiser!

Which of these essential gym beauty products will you be adding to your gym bag?

London Fashion Week: A rundown of the Spring/Summer 2019 beauty trends

711 1024 Vanity Van

London Fashion Week has officially come to a close, and with it, a whole new set of hair, make-up and nail trends to set the tone for Spring/Summer. From how to elevate a tired hairstyle with staple hair accessories, to how to rock an electric, neon nail, this season’s backstage beauty offerings definitely didn’t fall short. Vanity Van is giving you the ultimate rundown on all of the best hair, makeup and nail moments from the runways, plus our personal favourite beauty looks from London Fashion Week.

Hair

In case you haven’t heard, hair accessories are the styling staple to watch out for this season. From puffy headbands, to head wraps, and jewelled hair slides, London Fashion Week was dotted with signature hair accessories, and Simone Rocha is the designer that we all need to thank. The accessorising trend has been gaining momentum over the past few seasons, with Rocha’s SS18 runway playing a huge role in making the effortlessly feminine hair clip coveted by all. With designers such as Michael Kors and Anna Sui taking Rocha’s lead and giving their runway a regal vibe, the hair clip is sure to be a party season staple for us all in the Spring/Summer season.

London Fashion Week Colin Horgan On/Off X Graphic EyeMakeup

From fresh, glowy skin to nude lips, natural simplicity is usually the go-to at London Fashion Week, but this season, it looks as though the exaggerated look is reigning supreme. With bold shades taking the spotlight on the eyes, this season’s runway looks were nothing but simple. This look from the Colin Horgan On/Off X show during London Fashion week is proving that the bold, graphic eye trend that was all the rage last season is here to stay. Give your everyday eye look a splash of the 80’s whilst keeping the rest of the face natural to create the perfect balance of minimal and daring.

Nails

Nail art is always a runway staple, and London Fashion Week has served up a plethora of fresh nail inspiration to obsess over. Neon is always trending in fashion, and now, it’s extending to your manicure. Nail artist, Mei Kawajiri, worked her manicure magic to create this design for the Philipp Plein show. You can achieve this neon nail look with a simple coat of electric gel polish, or if you want to put your manicure skills to the test, try out a daring nail design. Whether you’re searching for something exaggerated, playful, or daring this Spring/Summer, this energising nail trend is perfect for everyone.

If you’re still on the search for more of the latest trends over the past year, check out our blog post on the AW18 beauty trends. Which of these trends will you be trying out this season?

Valentine’s day hair and make up get the look

1024 1024 Vanity Van

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to step out of your usual make-up and hair comfort zone and crank up the romance. Whether you’re a hopeless romantic, or an anti-valentines villain, these looks are sure to be a head turner this Valentine’s Day.

Go sexy

A cat eye is a classic, sultry look that is perfect for a Valentine’s Day date night, or a night out on the town with your girl gang. Using a jet black liquid or gel eyeliner, follow along the edge of your eyeshadow to create an angle and drag it back to your lash-Valentine's Day Sexy Lookline to create the perfect wing. If winged eyeliner isn’t your forte, use a deep brown eyeshadow and repeat the same steps, but diffuse the colour by blending the wing into the outer corner and crease of your eye.

As a classic cat eye is the ultimate sexy makeup look, it is only fitting that we pair it with a tousled, sexy bed hair look. To achieve this effortless “I just got lucky” hair look, begin by adding a volumizing mousse to damp hair and blow dry using a round brush head. Taking big sections of your hair, curl with a 1.5″ curling iron before brushing out your work loosely. Polish off the look by backcombing at the crown of your head and seal the deal with a coating of extra hold hairspray. Although this hairstyle takes a while to perfect, it looks so effortless that your date will be none the wiser.

Go romantic

This Valentine’s Day, if you wanna crank up the romance, why not go for the ‘no-makeup makeup’ look? Keep your eyes minimal by dusting a light wash of colour over your eyelids, such as a reflective gold or shimmery pink. For skin, begin by Valentine's Day Romantic Lookexfoliating and moisturising. Then, apply a glow-enhancing primer and follow up with an illuminating tinted moisturiser to give your date the illusion that you are glowing from within. If the ‘no-makeup’ look leaves you feeling a little too naked, pop on some individual lashes on the outer corner of your eye for a fluttery, flirty touch.

If you’re a fan of the classic romantic up-do, this is your chance to get creative with it by trying different techniques or by adding hair accessories for some extra glam. To create this simple, effortless look, begin by gathering your hair into a ponytail, making sure to leave a few strands of hair out. Make a bun out of your ponytail, either by using a hair doughnut, or if you’re lucky enough to have naturally thick locks, secure it with a hair elastic. Curl the strands at the front of your head loosely with a curling iron and secure a few of them towards the back of your head. This elegant bun is bursting with femininity and is sure to be a hit with your date.

Go vampy

If your look is more Dita Von Teese than Kate Winslet, the work is all in the prep. Are your lips ready to pucker up? Before applying your lipstick, use a gentle lip scrub to get rid of the dead skin cells and achieve the Valentine's Day Vampy Lookperfect pout. If you’re spending this Valentine’s day single, nothing quite says anti-valentine’s cheer like a dark, grunge lip, so whack on a lipstick as dark as your soul and show them what they’re missing. Team with a smoky dark eye to create a really vampy impact.

Kim Kardashian’s iconic sleek look is one of the most sought-after styles, making it perfect for Valentine’s Day. To achieve this look, start by running a small amount of serum through the ends of your hair. As you straighten your hair, the product will melt in, giving you the high-shine, poker-straight effect. Finally, polish off the look by spritzing some shine spray. Although this hairstyle may be the epitome of elegance and glamour, it can easily be vamped up with a dark lip and some staple pieces of jewellery for a date night look that’s out of the box.

What look will you be going for this Valentine’s Day?

Contouring Curve

To contour or not to contour – is the art of contouring dead?

427 440 Vanity Van

Popularised by A-listers, such as Kim Kardashian, and Instagram beauty influencers, contouring has quickly become one of the biggest beauty trends of the last few years. What was once a well-kept secret of celebrities and makeup artists has now become an everyday practice for the typical makeup obsessive. But like every trend that emerges from the beauty world, has contouring had its day?

Contouring naturalHere at VV we personally believe that it is here to stay, but in a much more subtle way. Say goodbye to the dramatic, ‘insta-famous’ way of face contouring and welcome a soft, bronzed contour that naturally shapes the face without it looking streaky or muddy. Pick a cool toned cream contour colour that compliments your skin-tone, making sure to steer clear of warm, orange tones to avoid the dreaded wotsit effect. Using a cream contour will allow the product to seamlessly blend into the skin, making it look natural and soft.

2019 is officially the year of the liquid highlighter. I’m sure we can all appreciate the difference a well-placed highlighter makes to our face shape. Opt for a high-shine version of your typical highlighter and strategically place it along the top of your cheekbone, temples and the bridge and tip of your nose. This will create the illusion of a slim, elongated face without having to cake your face with bronzer. When in doubt, turn to the glow.

One of the most common struggles when it comes to contouring is achieving professional results but in a way that is quick and Contouring Curveeasy. There are minimal tools available that offer a simple solution to creating the perfect contour, until the hero product of all beauty tools was born: Contour Curve. It is as simple as hooking the tool around your ear and pointing the tool towards your mouth which automatically lines it up with the hollows of your cheekbones. Then, apply your chosen contouring product, remove the tool and blend! We spoke to founder of Contour Curve, Michaela Chalk, who has worked with us in the past. “I want everyone to feel good with their makeup results whether it was a professional applying their makeup or they were doing it themselves.”

Contouring Beauty Tool

To achieve the ‘less is more’ look brands are shifting their focus towards skincare instead of cosmetics. A new skincare tool that has recently emerged on the beauty market is the infamous facial roller. One of the top brands on the market at the moment is Nurse Jaime pictured here. This beauty tool is said to give the skin an instant ‘uplift’, temporarily energising, enhancing and uplifting the skin. It was designed with the intention of mirroring the massage techniques used in a luxury facial, giving you glowy, plump, tightened skin while saving you time and money. To use simply follow your usual skincare routine and then use the ‘press and roll’ technique with the roller across your skin. This will also help the products you have applied to fully penetrate your skin and leave you with a freshly sculpted face, without the layers of product.

How do you feel about contouring? Do you think the beauty trend is here to stay?

New year new you: Vanity Vans top tips for beauty resolutions

1024 1024 Vanity Van

Typical New Year resolutions are comprised of vowing to complete dry January, beat laziness and hit the gym, or lose a few pounds. But have you ever thought how you could improve your beauty regime? We thought we would offer you some simple steps you can take to tackle your beauty habits and set new year beauty resolutions that will stick.

Give your make up brushes a spring clean!

If you’re an avid make-up wearer, you should be aware of the importance of keeping your brushes clean and how they can trigger unwanted breakouts when you skip this essential beauty routine. Product, oil, dirt and bacteria can get trapped in the bristles. Make a vow to regularly clean your brushes and erase the risk of clogged pores or pesky spots. The unsung hero for this job is baby shampoo, its gentle and won’t ruin the brush fibres.

Stop your hoarding

We are sure Marie Kondo will agree with us but tidying is not just for the wardrobe. Why not tackle your beauty products and make up collection?.  Using expired makeup and skincare products is akin to eating out of date food, so get ruthless and declutter your expired products. Getting rid of the products that are past their prime will give you more space and incentive to trial and test new products – ditch the old and welcome in the new.

Protect your skin!

Committing to wearing SPF everyday this new year, including the Winter months, is essential to protecting your skin from the unseen dangers of the sun. If you’re still scarred from the greasy, thick suncream from your childhood, there are suncreams on the market that are super lightweight and most foundations and BB creams contain a high SPF these days. If you think that SPF will ruin your chances of achieving a bronzed glow, a self-tanner for the face is the perfect alternative to a natural tan, without having to compromise the health of your skin.

How many of these New Year beauty resolutions will you be following, and do you have some of your own ?
