The salon was absolutely rammed all weekend fully booked both days and we have had to turn people away – the artists at Latitude have loved the treatments – male hair cuts and massages are the most popular we have done dozens of Miners cosmetics makeovers on the girls getting them stage ready and we have got through buckets of Batiste dry shampoo treating stressed out festival locks and Nicky Clarke tease me backcomb in a bottle for extra va va voom and quiffage.

Eddie Izzard

Eddie Izzard came in to book a miners makeover and showed us his fabulous nails at Latitude festival 2013Eddie swung by the salon earlier and we talked nails nails nails !! He had the most magnificent nails which were created by Sophie Harris-Greenslade from The Illustrated Nail. Created with gel polish and free hand nail art they are literally a work of art… he is booked in for a massage and make up with us before his gig tomo – a bit of Miners Cosmetics eyeliner is exactly what he needs! We also gave him a massive bag of Miners make up to play with take him back to his glam make up 90’s days.

Jessie Ware

Jessie Ware popped in and showed us her nails at Latitude festival 2013Jessie Ware popped in after her set wearing a funky black top and denim jacket to say hi and give us a hug – we met her in May in Derry at Radio Ones big weekend in May and sorted out her festival ready digits with a red carpet manicure gel polish in ooo la licious on her toes and expresso yourself on her fingers. She looked gorgeous today and she too had awesome nails – its all about the nails today! We have been rocking out the Red Carpet Manicure gel nails at Latitude – Rockstar neon pink being aptly the most popular !

Everything Everything

Jeremy and Michael Everything Everything at Latitude festival 2013The drummer michael and bass player jeremy came in today from everything everything today discussing the trials of touring and how much the massage is so needed for their constant tour buses, stage shows and their manager tells us sleeping in odd positions in random places ! They did 20 shows in June alone. I asked Jeremy how do they do it he said when they think about it now it’s difficult to think how they pulled that off its pretty full on but it doesn’t really feel like work it’s their crew that have to all the hard work really they are just doing something that they love every day. They loved their vanity van goody bags especially the batiste dry shampoo perfect for touring and the miners cosmetics make up is perfect to keep the other halfs happy 🙂

Bloc Party

Bloc party hanging out in the salon at Latitude festival 2013Bloc party popped in last night for hair cuts and their crew were loving our Nicky Clarke samples they stripped us bare ! They spent ages with us lounging in the Bean Bag waiting room relaxing before their set.

Daughter

Igor guitar player from Daughter after his massage at Latitude festival 2013Igor from Daughter managed to secure the last massage slot of the day today the poor thing was knackered after relentless touring – one of his band members says he has what is know in the industry as ‘rock neck’ – too much head banging not enough warming up! Igor said sometimes they are so tired they end up falling asleep on planes dribbling not the best look… they fly to Oz in the morning for yet another gig – the rest of the band were gutted we couldn’t squeeze them in aswell – theres always next year boys ! and they took a fab goody bag of miners and nicky Clarke treats for the lead singer Eleanor – massive brownie points ! The drummer said after we handed them a can of Batiste as a consolation prize that hes never washing again ! nice 😉

Sun round up

Eddie Izzard

Eddie Izzard having a Miners makeover and hand massage at Latitude festival 2013Eddie Izzard after his miners makeover at Latitude festival 2013

The lovely Eddie Izzard rocked up to the salon today as promised for his Miners Makeover we used their brunette eyebrow pencil to define and shape his brows and some Miners Maxi mascara and black eyeliner to bring out his eyes ready for his set. He also had a relaxing hand massage whilst he was with us – we were so tempted to ask him about the rumours flying around site about him going for London mayor!

Rudimental

Sinead singer from Rudimental having her hairstyling finished with Nicky Clarke Tease me at Latitude festival 2013We had the entire crew in for a bit of everything ! Amir had a beard trim and hair cut, Tommy on vocals had a trim and Joel had a relaxing man manicure… The girl singers Becky and Sinead had hair styling we used some Nicky Clarke Weightless treatment with argan oil to smooth Beckys locks and protect them and finishing off with some Batiste XXL plumping powder to give her some extreme body for their stage show whilst Sinead had Nicky Clarke heat protector sprayed on her curls which were created using Nicky Clarke irons and finished off with some Batiste shine spray and Nicky Clarke tease me. We used Goddess Miners eyeshadow to create a beautiful smokey eye on Becky and finished it off with Voluptulash Miners extreme mascara for extra va va voom. Becky had the longest eyelashes ever – stunning ! Some of the team popped round to watch the band and the make up looked amazing on the big screens.

Becky singer from Rudimental having her miners voluptulash applied at Latitude festival 2013

The band got a bit of a ticking off by their manager as they were almost late on stage as they were with us – they even had to run their mikes over to them in the salon.

As I am typing this Becky has just dashed back ionto the salon as they came off stage to re blow dry her hair of all the sweat ! and stick in some hint of colour blonde batiste – which should stop it going greasy so they can celebrate in style later !

Amir from Rudimental after his hair and beard trim at Latitude festival 2013Disclosure

Guy from Disclosure pre massage Latitude festival 2013Howard and Guy had just landed with Rudimental from an amazing festival called Melt in Berlin where they both played together. Howard told us they have these giant cranes with strobes for stages and a beach behind each one – hashtag random. We chatted to both teams about Ibiza as Rudimental are flying out their to dj at privilege next week and Disclosure have been out there 4 times already this season. Howard said they loved Usuaahia but were disappointed that as a pool party you can’t jump in the pool. We were comparing notes on favourite clubs and the big garage come back and how much we are loving it – Disclosure played with the legendary EZ the other day – one of our favs. The boys looked dapper in black jeans, nike trainers and a green shirt. We gave them their first ever massages and they loved the goody bags for their girl friends Howard said we were bloody great!

All the news from Vanity Vans Glastonbury festival public and backstage salon

150 150 Vanity Van

Glastonbury 2013 – the grand daddy of UK festivals was back with a vengeance for 2013 – my how we have missed you… The Glastonbury experience is a spiritual awakening of sorts, a celebration of art, entertainment and culture unlike any other in existence and as always the event did not disappoint on every level. Even the sun decided to put it’s hat on for the occasion. Its definitely the place to be to spot all the latest festival trends, fashion, beauty and styling and Vanity Van were once again in the middle of the action.

Glastonbury festival 2013

Mobile beauty events specialist Vanity Van (www.vanityvan.co.uk) had a huge salon stationed in the John Peel area where they have been in residence for five years now. Festival goers visited in their droves, the salon was bursting at the seams and fully booked on the main tent hair dilemma days of Friday and Saturday.  One customer said on twitter “getting an appointment at Vanity Van is like getting the golden ticket!”

BBC introducing stage Glastonbury

The Vanity Van team were also invited to feature backstage at the BBC Radio Ones Introducing Stage offering treatments to the hottest up and coming acts such as Daughter, Moko and the Reuben Brothers and oodles of special guests Radio One had lined up to wow the crowds and inspire the new kids on the block including Disclosure, Jake Bugg and Rizzle Kicks.

Celeb fans of Vanity Van included the X factors Caroline Flack who brought all her gal pals in every day of the festival for hair styling’s and make up. Caroline said

Caroline Flack Glastonbury

“I absolutely loved every second at Vanity Van – not only did we feel and look refreshed at Glastonbury but we felt looked after and everyone was so friendly” She is such a good buddy, she brought a girlfriend to Glastonbury to get over a bad breakup. We bet she washed that man right outta her hair! “I look cleaner than in normal life,” Flack’s buddy enthused after her much needed pampering sessions.

Grimmy aka Nick Grimshaw is a friend of Vanity Van and requested a massage from them – live on air! He was also the recipient of some rather unusual fan attention when a fan asked to sign his boot. Er, as you do…

Nick Grimshaw GlastonburyNick Grimshaw and Disclosure at Glastonbury

Their favourite celeb spot was Jade Jagger. Can you believe 48 hours before she was at a party at the posh Serpentine Gallery – having her make up done by Vanity Van’s Tamara – and then suddenly shes out in the fields of muddy Glastonbury? How very Rock and roll!

Matt Smith Doctor Who Glastonbury
Saturday saw an unusual visitor in the shape of Matt Smith the one and only Doctor Who sporting a new shaved hair do and some fetching black skinny jeans. He was having a dilemma with an unsightly cigarette burn which the Vanity Van girls tended to with plaster and some much needed TLC before painting him with some crazy arse Kiss Make up to cover up the damage. The complete gent even offered to take the girls all out for a drink to thank them.

Even the new kids on the block took advantage of Vanity Vans backstage services including the Katonas who opted for some luxurious eyelashes. Whilst Edward from Ady Suleiman and Alfie from J Brown had complete hair do restyles. Even Shakka and his manager came running over saying they had been looking all over for the team after meeting them at Radio One’s Big Weekend in Derry – its good to be in demand!

Nicky Clarke Glastonbury

The main salon was a hive of activity conducting over a thousand treatments. Hair is one of the most popular and Vanity Van’s stylist slots were in hot demand. Customers washed their hair with the luxurious volume and moisture ranges from Nicky Clarke (www.nickyclarke.com) before being pampered and preened by Vanity Van’s award winning stylists. Up do’s with staying power and curly blows with volume were all the rage. One customer tweeted their beehive lasted a full three days in the fields!

Batiste GlastonburyTo cope with the demand Vanity Van have a huge section of Do it Yourself stations featuring the latest hero product line up from Batiste (www.batistehair.co.uk) taking dry styling to a whole new level with their XXL va va voom dry shampoo and plumping powders.  The customers were also loving the complimentary Batiste Cherry samples – such a perfect Glastonbury beauty essential ideal to fit into your handbag.

MMiners Cosmetics Glastonburyake up and face and body art are always festival favs particularly to hide those festival party bags – and Miners Cosmetics (www.minerscosmetics.co.uk) have the perfect Complete Base concealer for the job. Their aptly named Glastonberry mood gloss was also a major fave with the make up clients.

Miners nails GlastonburyUnbelievably Glastonbury saw a flood of male nail enthusiasts with two chaps having a Miners ‘man’ icure and a pedicure or two – and we are not just talking a shiny buff here we are talking full on nail paint including the obligatory ‘statement’ nail. Red Carpet Manicure (www.redcarpetmanicure.co.uk) – was also a huge favourite for its extreme festival staying power – Ooo la liscious being the most sought after colour of the weekend perfect to compliment everyone’s fab Glasto tans.Red Carpet Manicure glastonbury

Radio Ones Big Weekend – all the news from Vanity Vans backstage mobile salon

150 150 Vanity Van

Radio 1’s Big Weekend has kicked off festival season in earnest, with more than 35,000 fans enjoy a wide variety of the biggest and best summer music around. New power couple Calvin Harris and Rita Ora headlined Friday night; on Saturday, Biffy Clyro rocked the main stage headline slot while DJ Fresh closed the 1xtra stage; and on Sunday, artists including Bruno Mars, Paramore, Olly Murs and Little Mix wrapped up proceedings.

Mobile beauty events specialist Vanity Van (www.vanityvan.co.uk) carried out hundreds of treatments on the celebrities and their teams in their backstage mobile salon. Stationed outside the former army barracks that were converted into changing rooms for the festival’s biggest stars, Alix and her team were right in the middle of the action. Wretch 32’s crew were singing their praises “it really brings a lift to the backstage atmosphere, its a great service”

Radio One Big Weekend Robbie Williams Dizzee Rascal at Vanity Van

And thank goodness they were – they saved the day on the closing night of the festival when Bruno Mars’s band had to borrow hairdryers to revive electrical instruments that had been soaked in the changeable weather! Later his team came dashing in for hair products and left with Nicky Clarke’s (www.nickyclarke.com) Tease Me Powder, Great Body Ultimate Mousse and Instant Calmer Balm to fix Bruno’s hair before the show.

The Vanity Van hairdressers were particularly busy – many artists simply don’t have time on tour to squeeze in a cut so a visit to Vanity Van is very convenient. DJ Fresh and the boys from Kodaline, The Foals, Bring me the Horizon and We are the Ocean were their biggest star bookings. Mark from Kodaline even had a go at using Nicky Clarke’s straight and curl styler on their stylist Tamara – he was actually pretty good at it (new career maybe…).  The new product ranges were raved about, Nicky Clarkes Tease me being a particular favourite for extra body and texture for guys and gals alike. Whilst the new Batiste (www.batistehair.co.uk) range of dry shampoos saved the day on many occasions reviving stressed out festival locks and rain swept ‘do’s’.

Radio One Big Weekend massage in the Vanity Van mobile beauty salon

Massages were uber popular this weekend. Photo credited to Graham Maxwell.

Massage is always in high demand at events such as this what with all the stresses and strains of touring and performing. The Vanity Van therapists worked their magic on well over a hundred clients over the weekend including the likes of Macklemore, Shannon from 30 Seconds To Mars, Jessie Ware, Kodaline, The Foals, The Vaccines, Wretch-32 and Katy B’s crew. Macklemore said of his experience “AMAZING massage, Never wanted it to end. Incredible and very informative was so appreciated…”

The dancers and drummers are particular fans of a rub down especially after an energetic set. The Vanity Van girls revived Labrinth and Dizzee Rascal’s drummers who are regulars, while Dash from Haim came into the salon on Sunday before their set and told them he fell asleep during his massage it was so good. Little Mix’s dancers all had back rubs before busting some shapes outside the salon with the girls. And poor Gus from Alt-J was gutted he had to change his pre booking when backstage schedules changed.

Man makeovers seemed to be the order of the day with Little Mix’s dancers opting for Miners Cosmetics (www.minerscosmetics.co.uk) spruce ups before they hit the stage. Their hero product Maxi Mascara also came in very handy in the frequent downpours.

Nail treatments were in high demand especially their new Gel polish range Red Carpet Manicure (www.redcarpetmanicure.co.uk) – which is ideal for singers, dancers and production crew as it has true staying power. Everyone was also going crazy for eyelashes with Lola’s mink lashes a personal fave of all Iggy Azaleas dancers and Sheezar from Wretch 32 who is a Vanity Van eyelashes regular.

Here is a roundup of backstage gossip and beauty news from each day from the Vanity Van team…

Friday 24th May 2013

Greg James with Vanity Van mobile beauty salon boss Alix

Greg James and Vanity Van boss Alix just after he opened the site

Greg James from Radio 1 and Sarah-Jane Crawford from 1xtra requested stylists the other side of the park a mere five minutes before kick off! Alix and the Vanity Van girls had to move pretty swift to deliver some Lola mink lashes and fit them quick time between links.

The four best dressing rooms on Friday were held for Calvin Harris, Rita Harris and Dizzee Rascal. Surprise guest Robbie Williams was housed in between Calvin and Rita and had an interesting rider, including ginger root. Is that the secret of his youthful enthusiasm? The team rushed to the rescue again when Dizzee asked to borrow the VV speakers – bit of pre set tunage we wonder?

Vanity Van regulars Maverick Sabre had the full VIP pampering experience. Mav told the girls that he has been busy focusing on the eagerly anticipated second album. Singer Chantelle Nandi was treated to a long-lasting Red Carpet Manicure in Lola, a vampy deep red colour; plus a full Miners Cosmetics makeover. She said the make-up was “very beautiful” and the service “perfect”.

A$AP Rocky proved he hasn’t let fame go to his head and that he is a real modern kinda guy! He came to the Vanity Van personally to book in for a male manicure. Respect.

After the drama at Heathrow, Calvin allegedly gave Rita a lift to Derry on his private jet. Awwwww….

We love Conor Maynard all the more after seeing

him perform at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Derry. Despite his rapid rise to fame, he is so approachable and helpful. When TV crews gave him just 10 minutes to prepare for an interview, he asked for the Vanity Van make up artists to give him a spruce up so Emma was sent running to the dressing room. She used Miners Cosmetics Complete Base foundation and pressed powder to make him even more flawless for the screen. He said “Everyone was very lovely, very helpful, and very beautiful which is always a plus !” Thank you Conor!

Backstage riders are fascinating. Our spies tell us that Labrinth – who had the biggest dressing room on site, even though he wasn’t a headliner – asked for a big bottle of MountGay rum, cans of ginger beer and a MASSIVE bowl of fruit. Lemons, limes, apples, pears… he clearly is fanatical about getting his five-a-day. Hey, the man needs energy for on-stage!

Saturday 25th May 2013

The Saturdays looked gorgeous as always as they posed outside the van on Saturday but the girls had a horrible journey. For some reason, they flew into Dublin, not Belfast, so had a two-hour drive to the venue through winding Irish roads. Of course they got lost so had to rush round interviews in five inch heels and only just made it to the stage in time. We hope it wasn’t too pregnant Rochelle and Frankie.

Radio One Big Weekend Zane Lowe and Matt Edmonson post Vegas show girl, Nicky Clarke and Miners Cosmetics makeover in the Vanity Van mobile beauty salon

Zane Lowe and Matt Edmonson post Vegas show girl, Nicky Clarke and Miners Cosmetics makeover

We had so much fun giving Matt Edmondson a makeover live on Radio 1. The theme was Vegas Showgirl so we gave him a red wig, Lola eyelashes and a Miners Cosmetics makeover using Lip stick ‘Kiss me Quick’. You look gorgeous Matt! Zane Lowe was passing at the time and was particularly impressed… We also caught Matt later on taking a photo of Conor Maynard for two happy fans. We wonder if they were swapping make-up tips…

Poor Conor Maynard tried to head out into the main crowd on Saturday to enjoy his pal Labrinth among the masses. He donned a hat, shades and hood and asked the Vanity Van girls if they thought he’d get away with it. Unfortunately, he didn’t get very far… Shortly after entering the arena, he was stopped by a seven-foot man. No, not security, but a fan wanting a photo. Better luck next time Conor…

DJ Fresh and Fleur are Vanity Van regulars. DJ Fresh had a haircut and beard trim while Fleur had a Miners Cosmetics makeover. She loved Miner Cosmetics’ new Mood Gloss and went for the festival-friendly Glastonberry shade. It creates an individual pink shade for each person who wears it by adapting to lip colour and temperature. Fleur’s went disco diva pink of course! “The Vanity Van team are really friendly and professional,” she said. “I’m loving the Mood Gloss – so much so I’m wearing it on stage tonight!”

A big hit backstage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend was the Red Carpet Manicure. This durable gel lasts two to three weeks and you can apply it yourself at home. There are bright and sparkly options ideal for festival-proof glamour. Bryony, who was singing with We Are The Ocean, went for the shades Diva In Disguise with a topping of sparkly Wow!! Whilst Jessie Ware had a Red Carpet ‘Ooh-La-Licious’ Manicure and ‘Expresso Yourself’ Pedicure in her dressing room! We also applied some beautiful Lola Real Mink eyelashes to give her eyes the wow factor.

Sunday 26th May 2013

We had a good old chat with Jade Little Mix – her new turquoise curls were certainly adventurous! She told Vanity Van owner Alix the shade was hair dye, not chalk or a wash-in, wash-out colour. We think you rocked it Jade! Jade and Jesy and the Little Mix dancers joined the team for a dance off in the car park to warm up before the gig.

Wretch 32 took good care of his team by booking them all in for pre-gig massages in the dressing rooms. He didn’t have time for one himself but what a nice boss!

The Script were a big hit with the Vanity Van ladies, who were all fighting over treatments for Danny. In fact, with Jared Leto’s band 30 Seconds To Mars, The Script and Olly Murs all on the same floor, there were a lot of lovesick ladies in the corridors!

Radio One Big Weekend The Script Vanity Van mobile beauty salon

The salon was a hotspot for festival fun. Kendrick Lamar’s dancers and Bruno Mars’s band all came to hang out with the Vanity Van team and bop around to their tunes. We even caught Olly Murs grooving to some of their garage beats. Hilariously Disclosure just happened to walk past when the salon was rocking out their big tune White Noise – their manager was impressed. The salons comfy beanbags from Bean Bag Bazaar, their foam connect four, haribos and photo booth props were a great attraction for some festival fun with the likes of Little Mix’s dancers raiding the props to create some hilarious pics.

Festival forecast…DRY & FABULOUS…and that’s just your hair!

150 150 Vanity Van

I’m a big festival fan, so I know just how tough tent living can be on your hair. When you pack the full set of dry styling products from Batiste this festival season, the only thing that should be pouring down on you is the compliments. Here’s our top tips to take your look from breakfast band stalking to midnight at the main stage without breaking your style stride.

Tip 1 – Start the day with a spritz of NEW Batiste Strength and Shine Dry Shampoo. Packed with all the regular H²0 free benefits of Batiste Dry Shampoo, this one comes with a sprinkling of L’Arginine which are clever  amino acids that restore shine and stimulate your follicles for healthy hair. It all adds up to dull festival hair being a thing of the past. Batitse XXL Plumping powder

Tip 2 – Give your hair some much needed nourishment with NEW Batiste Smoothing Conditioning Mist. This non greasy and weightless invisible conditioning spray is infused with Argan Oil to help tame your hair and leave it feeling and looking fabulous.

Tip 3 – Plump up the volume as the sun goes down with NEW Batiste XXL Plumping Powder. A teeny pot of wonder dust that you sprinkle into your roots for instant volume.  Invisible and re-mouldable, it makes big hair a breeze which means you can leave out the cuticle crunching backcombing. Perfect!

Tip 4 – Take it to the max by midnight with Batiste XXL Volume Dry Shampoo which delivers body to flagging styles and instant texture for an on-trend matte look as well as refreshing even the grungiest festival hair.Batiste XXL volume

Warren Holmes Nicky Clarke shares his top survival tips for festival hair

150 150 Vanity Van

Guest blog from Warren Holmes, International Creative Director, Nicky Clarke

Backstage Hairdresser of the Year 2013 Warren Holmes has kindly put together his TOP TIPS for maintaining fabulous festival hair.

Warren Holmes Nicky Clarke hairdresser

Here are my tips to managing and styling your hair throughout a festival:

• The night before, give you hair a good wash and use an intense moisturising conditioner. Use a good foundation product when wet like a strong holding mousse and dry into your hair

• Tong your hair, so it has movement and shape…..the bigger the better, you have 3-4 days for it to drop and play with.

• Accessorise, Hair accessories are huge for Spring/Summer 2010, look at Marc Jacobs for inspiration. Bows, Berets, Headbands and the obligatory oversized Hats are all always cool but why not try something a little different, a sailors Hat or Knickers pinned into your hair. (Check out my 4 way plait video for a video tutorial on this look)

• Dry Shampoo is a great product to replenish hair and make it feel fresher. It also adds great texture and builds up some volume at the roots which is ideal when hair gets greasy and ways it down. If Dry Shampoo isn’t an option then go for Talking Powder.

• Avoid too much product, Serums, waxes etc.  Your Hairs natural oil’s will show through themselves so avoid anything else that will make Hair oily.

• Plait hair at night to keep a curl and avoid frizz

• Avoid touching throughout the day, dirt on hands will build up grease

Mostly remember, have fun with your hair- it’s a great accessory and can be styled in many ways. Plan daily looks as you would an outfit. Tong your hair before you go and work it out throughout the weekend by brushing and combing out. Plait Hair to one side or pin the back underneath leaving just the sides out, use bows berets and anything you can think of and at least one day wear a hat but make sure your hair is still done underneath that hat. Have Fun and beware of the beers flying overhead!”
