Radio 1’s Big Weekend has kicked off festival season in earnest, with more than 35,000 fans enjoy a wide variety of the biggest and best summer music around. New power couple Calvin Harris and Rita Ora headlined Friday night; on Saturday, Biffy Clyro rocked the main stage headline slot while DJ Fresh closed the 1xtra stage; and on Sunday, artists including Bruno Mars, Paramore, Olly Murs and Little Mix wrapped up proceedings.
Mobile beauty events specialist Vanity Van (www.vanityvan.co.uk) carried out hundreds of treatments on the celebrities and their teams in their backstage mobile salon. Stationed outside the former army barracks that were converted into changing rooms for the festival’s biggest stars, Alix and her team were right in the middle of the action. Wretch 32’s crew were singing their praises “it really brings a lift to the backstage atmosphere, its a great service”
And thank goodness they were – they saved the day on the closing night of the festival when Bruno Mars’s band had to borrow hairdryers to revive electrical instruments that had been soaked in the changeable weather! Later his team came dashing in for hair products and left with Nicky Clarke’s (www.nickyclarke.com) Tease Me Powder, Great Body Ultimate Mousse and Instant Calmer Balm to fix Bruno’s hair before the show.
The Vanity Van hairdressers were particularly busy – many artists simply don’t have time on tour to squeeze in a cut so a visit to Vanity Van is very convenient. DJ Fresh and the boys from Kodaline, The Foals, Bring me the Horizon and We are the Ocean were their biggest star bookings. Mark from Kodaline even had a go at using Nicky Clarke’s straight and curl styler on their stylist Tamara – he was actually pretty good at it (new career maybe…). The new product ranges were raved about, Nicky Clarkes Tease me being a particular favourite for extra body and texture for guys and gals alike. Whilst the new Batiste (www.batistehair.co.uk) range of dry shampoos saved the day on many occasions reviving stressed out festival locks and rain swept ‘do’s’.
Massage is always in high demand at events such as this what with all the stresses and strains of touring and performing. The Vanity Van therapists worked their magic on well over a hundred clients over the weekend including the likes of Macklemore, Shannon from 30 Seconds To Mars, Jessie Ware, Kodaline, The Foals, The Vaccines, Wretch-32 and Katy B’s crew. Macklemore said of his experience “AMAZING massage, Never wanted it to end. Incredible and very informative was so appreciated…”
The dancers and drummers are particular fans of a rub down especially after an energetic set. The Vanity Van girls revived Labrinth and Dizzee Rascal’s drummers who are regulars, while Dash from Haim came into the salon on Sunday before their set and told them he fell asleep during his massage it was so good. Little Mix’s dancers all had back rubs before busting some shapes outside the salon with the girls. And poor Gus from Alt-J was gutted he had to change his pre booking when backstage schedules changed.
Man makeovers seemed to be the order of the day with Little Mix’s dancers opting for Miners Cosmetics (www.minerscosmetics.co.uk) spruce ups before they hit the stage. Their hero product Maxi Mascara also came in very handy in the frequent downpours.
Nail treatments were in high demand especially their new Gel polish range Red Carpet Manicure (www.redcarpetmanicure.co.uk) – which is ideal for singers, dancers and production crew as it has true staying power. Everyone was also going crazy for eyelashes with Lola’s mink lashes a personal fave of all Iggy Azaleas dancers and Sheezar from Wretch 32 who is a Vanity Van eyelashes regular.
Here is a roundup of backstage gossip and beauty news from each day from the Vanity Van team…
Friday 24th May 2013
Greg James from Radio 1 and Sarah-Jane Crawford from 1xtra requested stylists the other side of the park a mere five minutes before kick off! Alix and the Vanity Van girls had to move pretty swift to deliver some Lola mink lashes and fit them quick time between links.
The four best dressing rooms on Friday were held for Calvin Harris, Rita Harris and Dizzee Rascal. Surprise guest Robbie Williams was housed in between Calvin and Rita and had an interesting rider, including ginger root. Is that the secret of his youthful enthusiasm? The team rushed to the rescue again when Dizzee asked to borrow the VV speakers – bit of pre set tunage we wonder?
Vanity Van regulars Maverick Sabre had the full VIP pampering experience. Mav told the girls that he has been busy focusing on the eagerly anticipated second album. Singer Chantelle Nandi was treated to a long-lasting Red Carpet Manicure in Lola, a vampy deep red colour; plus a full Miners Cosmetics makeover. She said the make-up was “very beautiful” and the service “perfect”.
A$AP Rocky proved he hasn’t let fame go to his head and that he is a real modern kinda guy! He came to the Vanity Van personally to book in for a male manicure. Respect.
After the drama at Heathrow, Calvin allegedly gave Rita a lift to Derry on his private jet. Awwwww….
We love Conor Maynard all the more after seeing
him perform at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Derry. Despite his rapid rise to fame, he is so approachable and helpful. When TV crews gave him just 10 minutes to prepare for an interview, he asked for the Vanity Van make up artists to give him a spruce up so Emma was sent running to the dressing room. She used Miners Cosmetics Complete Base foundation and pressed powder to make him even more flawless for the screen. He said “Everyone was very lovely, very helpful, and very beautiful which is always a plus !” Thank you Conor!
Backstage riders are fascinating. Our spies tell us that Labrinth – who had the biggest dressing room on site, even though he wasn’t a headliner – asked for a big bottle of MountGay rum, cans of ginger beer and a MASSIVE bowl of fruit. Lemons, limes, apples, pears… he clearly is fanatical about getting his five-a-day. Hey, the man needs energy for on-stage!
Saturday 25th May 2013
The Saturdays looked gorgeous as always as they posed outside the van on Saturday but the girls had a horrible journey. For some reason, they flew into Dublin, not Belfast, so had a two-hour drive to the venue through winding Irish roads. Of course they got lost so had to rush round interviews in five inch heels and only just made it to the stage in time. We hope it wasn’t too pregnant Rochelle and Frankie.
We had so much fun giving Matt Edmondson a makeover live on Radio 1. The theme was Vegas Showgirl so we gave him a red wig, Lola eyelashes and a Miners Cosmetics makeover using Lip stick ‘Kiss me Quick’. You look gorgeous Matt! Zane Lowe was passing at the time and was particularly impressed… We also caught Matt later on taking a photo of Conor Maynard for two happy fans. We wonder if they were swapping make-up tips…
Poor Conor Maynard tried to head out into the main crowd on Saturday to enjoy his pal Labrinth among the masses. He donned a hat, shades and hood and asked the Vanity Van girls if they thought he’d get away with it. Unfortunately, he didn’t get very far… Shortly after entering the arena, he was stopped by a seven-foot man. No, not security, but a fan wanting a photo. Better luck next time Conor…
DJ Fresh and Fleur are Vanity Van regulars. DJ Fresh had a haircut and beard trim while Fleur had a Miners Cosmetics makeover. She loved Miner Cosmetics’ new Mood Gloss and went for the festival-friendly Glastonberry shade. It creates an individual pink shade for each person who wears it by adapting to lip colour and temperature. Fleur’s went disco diva pink of course! “The Vanity Van team are really friendly and professional,” she said. “I’m loving the Mood Gloss – so much so I’m wearing it on stage tonight!”
A big hit backstage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend was the Red Carpet Manicure. This durable gel lasts two to three weeks and you can apply it yourself at home. There are bright and sparkly options ideal for festival-proof glamour. Bryony, who was singing with We Are The Ocean, went for the shades Diva In Disguise with a topping of sparkly Wow!! Whilst Jessie Ware had a Red Carpet ‘Ooh-La-Licious’ Manicure and ‘Expresso Yourself’ Pedicure in her dressing room! We also applied some beautiful Lola Real Mink eyelashes to give her eyes the wow factor.

We had a good old chat with Jade Little Mix – her new turquoise curls were certainly adventurous! She told Vanity Van owner Alix the shade was hair dye, not chalk or a wash-in, wash-out colour. We think you rocked it Jade! Jade and Jesy and the Little Mix dancers joined the team for a dance off in the car park to warm up before the gig.
Wretch 32 took good care of his team by booking them all in for pre-gig massages in the dressing rooms. He didn’t have time for one himself but what a nice boss!
The Script were a big hit with the Vanity Van ladies, who were all fighting over treatments for Danny. In fact, with Jared Leto’s band 30 Seconds To Mars, The Script and Olly Murs all on the same floor, there were a lot of lovesick ladies in the corridors!
The salon was a hotspot for festival fun. Kendrick Lamar’s dancers and Bruno Mars’s band all came to hang out with the Vanity Van team and bop around to their tunes. We even caught Olly Murs grooving to some of their garage beats. Hilariously Disclosure just happened to walk past when the salon was rocking out their big tune White Noise – their manager was impressed. The salons comfy beanbags from Bean Bag Bazaar, their foam connect four, haribos and photo booth props were a great attraction for some festival fun with the likes of Little Mix’s dancers raiding the props to create some hilarious pics.
